You must pay the $10 course fee, pick up the student manual and sign the consent form for all ages. You cannot sign up through the Sportsman's Club or the Instructors, the only way to be assured of a spot in the class is by going to the County Building.

The MSU Extension Office at the County Building,(4H Office), has new hours because of cut backs. They are open from Noon to 5PM Monday thru Thursday only. There phone number is 989-832-6640. This class is for all ages, not just youth, everyone has to go through the MSU Extension Office to sigh up regardless of age.

These classes filled up very early last year. If you plan on taking a Fall class you will need to sign up early, this is first come first serve basis with no exceptions.

Dress to be outdoors and you may get dirty. Bring your own lunch and anything special you want to drink. There will be water and there is a pop machine available. Lots of hands-on training and live fire activities. You will be shooting a muzzle loader, 20ga. shotgun, .22 cal rifle, and bow and arrow. (live fire is not a requirement to pass the class) Students with reading problems may have a parent or instructor read test questions to them if they request in advance. There is no age requirement but full classes give priority to those ten years and older who are able to begin hunting this year.

From 2008

The Hunter Safety Classes at Midland County Sportsman's Club for 2008 are over. It was a very successful year, we had two hundred eleven students sign up for our six classes which began in August, and finished this past weekend on October 26th.

On behalf of myself, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, I would like to express my thanks to the board members of the Midland County Sportsman's Club. Thank you for the use of your excellent shooting ranges and the club house for our classes.

Having the use of such nice facilities made it a pleasure to teach the classes this year. I know it made it special for the students. I would be very surprised if there are courses offered anywhere in the state that give students any better chance to do as many different live fire activities, on quality ranges, and without charge to the instructors for the use of the ranges or club house facility.

The live fire activities included giving every student the opportunity to shoot a .50 caliber muzzle loader at water filled balloons on the 100 yard range, they were able to shoot .22 caliber and .30 caliber rifles on the 25 yard range. We gave them the experience of shooting 20 gauge shotguns at sporting clays, and also top quality compound bows at the archery range set up by the Midland Youth Outdoor Program.

More than just the use of the facilities, two MCSC members who are certified hunter safety instructors, gave up their time to help me teach these classes. Special thanks to Eric Johnson and Bill Lake, MCSC members who on short notice showed up and did an excellent job of instructing. Thank you to MCSC member Bob Long, owner of Alex's Railside Restaurant in Sanford for catering lunches for the students at all six classes. Thanks to club member Matt Morley for making sure we had a pop machine installed in the clubhouse and for his help with obtaining sporting clays for the shotgun class.

Finally, President Ray Gross and all the board members of the Midland County Sportsman's Club, thank all of you for allowing me to instruct hunter safety classes at your club. You can all be proud of what this will do to keep our shooting sports alive and help the students we teach to be safe, responsible, and knowledgeable hunters.

John A.Talbot
MDNR Hunter Safety Instructor/International Bow Education Program Instructor.
