MCSC Subsonic Poker

Event Overview

  • Shooters will take a shot at eight targets at 100 yards.
  • Each shot that breaks the two inch circle earns one card draw from a standard 52 card deck.
  • Whoever can make the best five card hand wins.

Entrant Criteria and Eligibility

Event entry is open to the following:

  • MCSC Members
  • Guests of MCSC Members who are spouses of a member
  • Guests of MCSC Members who are juniors

Guests of members who are eighteen or older are ineligible to enter the event.

FAQs

Q:   What type of rifle can be used?
A:   Any rifle that conforms with MCSC rules can be used, including air rifles.
Q:   Are there any equipment rules or restrictions?
A:   Yes.  Participants may only use an unattached soft front bag, or a sling.  No bi-pods, rigid rests, or lead sleds may be used.
Q:   Are rear rests allowed?
A:   No, apart from the shooters hand.
Q:   Is there an entry fee?
A:   No.  Entry is free.
Q:   Do I need to own or bring a chronograph?
A:   No.  A chronograph will be provided.
Q:   Can I take any “warm up” shots?
A:   Yes.  Participants may take up to three “warm up” shots at a provided “warm up” target.
Q:   Is there a time limit?
A:   Yes.  Participants are limited to five minutes to complete their shots.
Q:   Do I have to register ahead of time?
A:   No, but spots are limited and pre-registering online guarantees your spot.

Full Event Procedures

I - Definitions

  1. Speed of Sound: For the purposes of this event, the speed of sound will be determined via the speed of sound calculator provided by the National Weather Service, using the forecasted high temperature for Jack Barstow Airport, rounded down to the nearest one-tenth ft/s.

II - General

  1. Entrants shall comply with all existing MCSC range rules.
  2. The event organizer may appoint deputies.
  3. Entrants will be given a maximum of five minutes to complete their shots.
  4. Entrants shall take up to three shots at the warm up target, before shooting their scored targets.
  5. The scored targets shall be numbered, and be shot in the order prescribed.
  6. Shots which exceed the speed of sound will be counted as missed targets.
  7. Entrants may cut the shuffled deck prior to their cards being drawn.
  8. If, in the opinion of the event organizer, or a deputy thereof, an entrant failed to complete the course of fire due to a fault of the entrant, the total number of card draws earned by the entrant at the point of their withdrawal shall be awarded, with all unattempted targets marked as missed.
  9. If, in the opinion of the event organizer, or a deputy thereof, an entrant failed to complete the course of fire due to force majeure, the following shall apply:
  10. The entrant's attempts shall not be counted.
  11. The event organizer shall allow the entrant to have another attempt at the course of fire, if time and circumstances permit.
  12. If, in the opinion of the event organizer, or a deputy thereof, an entrant has violated event procedures or has engaged in unsportsmanlike conduct during the event, the following shall apply:
  13. All of the entrant’s targets will be treated as missed.
  14. The event organizer shall note that the entrant’s participation in the round was disqualified.

III - Equipment

  1. Entrants may use one of the following to support their firearm:
  2. A soft front bag or rest which is not affixed to the firearm.
  3. A sling.
  4. No rear rest or support of any kind may be used, apart from the shooter’s hand.
  5. No bipods, tripods, “lead sleds”, or similar items may be used.
  6. The decision of the event organizer in regard to allowable equipment shall be final.
  7. Solid items, such as boards, may be placed under a soft front bag to adjust elevation at the discretion of the event organizer, or a deputy thereof.

IV - Operations

A - Administrative

  1. Entrants will check-in with the event coordinator, or a deputy thereof, when they are ready to be entered in the queue.
  2. When a shooting lane and a set of equipment are available, the event coordinator, or a deputy thereof, will inform the next entrant in the queue.
  3. Spouses or juniors entering with a member will be queued as one group.
  4. The event organizer may, at their discretion, “bump” pre-registered entrants ahead of “walk-up” entrants in the queue.
  5. Shall an entrant be unavailable when they are called from the queue, the next entrant up after them will be called, with the absent entrant remaining at the front of the queue for the next call.

B - Shooting

  1. Once the shooter declares that they and their equipment are ready, and the event coordinator, or a deputy thereof, ensures the targets, timer, and chronograph are ready, the event organizer, or a deputy thereof, will verbally confirm with the entrant that they understand the course of fire.
  2. Once the entrant confirms that they understand the course of fire, the event coordinator, or a deputy thereof, will verbally tell the entrant to standby, and verbally instruct the entrant to begin upon starting the timer.
  3. The decision of the event organizer, or a deputy thereof, as to if a shot was fired before time expired is final.

C - Card Drawing

  1. Once the event organizer, or deputy thereof, confirms the number of cards an entrant has earned, a standard 52 card deck will be shuffled.
  2. After shuffling, and providing the entrant an opportunity to cut the shuffled deck, the number of earned card draws will be drawn off the top of the deck.
  3. The resulting draw will be recorded, and the cards re-collected by the event organizer, or a deputy thereof.
